Gifts for Go Caroling Day

Have you tried caroling around your neighborhood before? We have, and it's so much fun! We were a small group of kids that braved the cold and went house to house singing (mostly out of tune), hoping a generous soul would gift us with a wad of cash for our efforts (rarely happened) or some sweet treats like chocolates (almost an impossibility). Caroling was mostly an excuse to hang out with friends from the neighborhood. Maybe it's not that appreciated by the younger generation now, but for us, caroling was a celebration of the spirit of the season, entertaining our neighbors with songs that fill the air with holiday cheer.

Caroling is a custom that dates back hundreds of years and continues to this day. Wassailing is an earlier custom that predates this practice and may be traced back to the Middle Ages. The word "wassailing" comes from the Old Norse phrase "ves heill," which can be translated as "be well and in good health." The habit of going to orchards that produced cider and singing to the trees to wish for a prosperous harvest is where the modern practice of wassailing got its start. However, over time, it evolved into what is now known as "caroling," which is a custom that is now associated with Christmas. However, some historians believe that this custom started when peasants paid a visit to their landlord's home and sang for him during Christmas time. In return, the landlord is expected to serve them food and drink. If not, they would "prank" the landlord, much like when we're out trick or treating on Halloween.
