Gifts for National Ambrosia Day

Christmas will be here before we know it, so it’s time to fill our mental taste buds with Christmas holiday potluck staples. Today we’re talking about “The Food of the Gods,” ambrosia.

The word “ambrosia” comes from Greek mythology. Reserved for the divine, no mortal can consume it. The Greek Gods were known to eat it to keep themselves from growing frail and weak. It’s also believed that anyone who eats it will be granted eternal life. Ambrosia was an essential part of the diet of the gods who lived on Mount Olympus; without it, they would have withered away. It comes as no surprise then that ambrosia was fiercely protected by the gods. Any mortal who would attempt to eat ambrosia would be put to death. In Greek mythology, ambrosia was often described as someone that can wipe away the symptoms of old age, which was the case with Penelope, a character in Homer’s Odyssey. Athena had prepared Penelope with ambrosia, which resulted in her looking younger, radiant, and desirable. When she was presented to her suitors, they all looked at her in awe and were inflamed with desire at the sight of her.
