Gifts for National Bootlegger’s Day

Do you know what bootlegging is? The illicit manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages is known as bootlegging. The practice of concealing flasks of illegal liquor in boot tops in order to trade with Native Americans is said to have become commonplace in the Midwest around the 1880s, which is when the term "bootlegging" entered common usage. Others believe that the phrase was first used during the American Civil War when troops would try to smuggle alcohol into army barracks by hiding pint bottles under their boots or beneath their trouser legs.

The year 1920 marked the beginning of the Prohibition Era in the United States, which lasted from 1920 to 1933. People thought it was impossible to implement Prohibition strictly. Some resourceful people came up with the idea of asking their doctors to write them prescriptions for therapeutic whiskey and other types of distilled alcohol. That is only one of the many legal loopholes that people who enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages take advantage of. There were also individuals who distilled their own alcohol at home, with some even resorting to distilling gin in their bathrooms. We can't imagine what that would taste like.

Some people believe Prohibition was necessary, while others believe it was nearly difficult for Prohibition Bureau officers to execute the Volstead Act's countrywide ban on producing and distributing alcoholic beverages. Well, we don't need bootleggers now since we're free to drink liquor anytime and anywhere, but cheers to celebrating the history of bootleggers today.
