Gifts for National Caramel Popcorn Day

Baseball and popcorn are from different worlds altogether, but it was a 1908 song about a baseball game that catapulted caramel popcorn to popularity. The lyricist Jack Norworth and composer Albert Von Tilzer referenced “cracker jacks” in the chorus of “Take Me Out To the Ball Game,” which, of course, was free marketing for the Cracker Jack brand and made it a household name in America.

Cracker Jack is a snack consisting of molasses-flavored caramel-coated popcorn and peanuts, but it wasn’t always known by that name. Brothers Frederick and Louis Rueckheim introduced their popcorn concoction as “Candied Popcorn and Peanuts” during the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. The term “Cracker Jack” followed later when a customer, impressed by how good the popcorn tasted, said, “That’s a crackerjack!” This name stuck and by 1896, the brothers were mass-producing this caramel popcorn in the United States.
