Gifts for National Children’s Book Day

If you've read "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling," you probably know Hans Christian Andersen, one of the most famous writers of all time.

Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales have enchanted readers for generations. In his fairytales, the plucky protagonist often faced adversity and ridicule but eventually rose above it. This resilience is something Hans Christian Andersen embodied throughout his life and was often reflected in his stories.

Andersen was born on April 2, 1805, in the Danish city of Odense. He grew up in abject poverty, but his shoemaker father introduced him to the world of literature, reading to him "Arabian Nights," which cultivated the young author's imagination. Hans Christian Andersen has stated that his time in school was the most challenging period of his life. Many believe that he had dyslexia, which would have undoubtedly contributed to his academic struggles. He was also discouraged from writing at school and was often bullied because of his appearance. He used these difficulties as inspiration to cultivate his love for fantasy and literature throughout his life.

Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales continue to endure until today. When The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in Switzerland first celebrated National Children's Picture Book Day in 1967, they decided to celebrate it on April 2, the anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth. Their goal is to encourage a love of reading, draw attention to children's literature, and honor one of the most prolific writers of all time.
