Countdowns are useful for a variety of reasons. From launching rockets, cooking and workouts, we live in a world where they are omnipresent and serve many purposes. For many, it can create a sense of urgency, while some perceive countdowns as tools to boost productivity. Timers come in all shapes and sizes now, but they’re all inspired by the simple hourglass.
Little is known about the history of the hourglass, but its first uses were mostly for seafaring individuals who ventured out to sea. Unaffected by bobbing waves, it was believed to keep track of time accurately. Marine hourglasses were used to measure time during voyages, such as the one Ferdinand Magellan partook when he set out to go around the world with eighteen hourglasses in tow.
Symbolically, the hourglass is associated with the fleeting nature of time. The hourglass is also depicted in many paintings such as in Jacob Jordaens’ “Youth between Vice and Vertu,” and “Vanitas Still Life with a Tulip, Skull and Hour-Glass” by Philippe de Champaigne.
