After seeing the destruction caused by an 800 square mile oil spill in the Santa Barbara Channel, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired to establish a day to address environmental issues. He called on the help of Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize nationwide teach-ins to highlight environmental problems and allow communities to discuss what can be done. Denis Hayes needed a name for the event so he consulted with Julien Koenig, regarded as one of the 20th century's most ingenious advertising writers. Julien Koenig came up with a host of names, but it was decided that "Earth Day" was the best choice.
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated. Over 20 million people took to the streets to show support for a multitude of environmental issues. Since its start, the organizers have promoted activities that educate the general public on topics such as climate change, pollution, recycling, and renewable energy. On the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010, about a billion people worldwide took action to protect the environment.
