Gifts for National Gingerbread Day

Did you know that there is a tradition of making a wish in Sweden where you place a gingerbread on your palm, and with your other hand, you have to press on it until it breaks. If the gingerbread breaks into three, your wish will come true. In England, it was also believed that women ate gingerbread "husbands," hoping they could meet the man of their dreams.

Rhonda Massingham Harts, author of the book Making Gingerbread Houses, claims that the oldest documented recipe for gingerbread originated in Greece about 2400 BC, where it was mainly used for ceremonial purposes. Fast forward to many centuries later, versions of gingerbread treats were developed in China and Europe. It's believed that gingerbreads were solely prepared by Catholic monks, who shaped them into angels and saints. Others were shaped as kings and queens, which was commonplace in Medieval fairs in England, France, and Germany. As for the gingerbread house, it became famous thanks to the Brothers Grimm's "Hansel and Gretel," where the story famously described a house made of sweet treats. This gingerbread house tradition, otherwise known as "lebkuchenhaeusle" made its way to the United States with the arrival of the first German settlers.
