Have you ever thought about "happy hour" and how it began? Sure those two words are often used nowadays to refer to a time during the day when drinks and food are sold much cheaper in a bar. Turns out history even has a more interesting story about its origins.
The story that the Navy is responsible for creating Happy Hour is by far the most widely believed version of the origins of the term "Happy Hour." Some historians believe that during World War I, sailors serving in the United States Navy participated in a weekly entertainment program known as "Happy Hour." During the program, they could watch movies, boxing matches, and even dance. They were put together in an effort to help combat the monotony that comes with a life spent at sea. By the time Prohibition was over, the notion of a "happy hour" had become widespread. In the 1960s, restaurants and bars began having regular "happy hours" in an effort to entice people to take advantage of reduced prices in bars.
We can all agree that Happy Hour has become a rite in the United States, which is true regardless of whether or not you are a cocktail connoisseur or simply can't resist a discounted price on oysters. That doesn't mean Happy Hour has to always happen in your favorite watering hole, though.
