Gifts for National Pig Day

Today is the day of all Sus domesticus. No idea what we’re talking about? It’s our favorite even-toed hoofed mammal, the pig! On National Pig Day, we’re honoring these adorable and incredibly social animals.

Pigs are just one of the many fascinating creatures we see in storybooks and famous movies. They’re even considered symbols of prosperity and wealth in many cultures around the world. Perhaps you even remember coin containers from your childhood that were shaped like pigs.

Piggy banks remain ubiquitous in our culture even to this day. It has a rather interesting history that dates back to the middle ages. When people from those days wanted to save money, they stored it in a receptacle made of “pygg,” an orange-colored clay. Fast forward to a few centuries later, English potters, who no doubt poked fun at the origins of the word, would create containers shaped like pigs.

These adorable containers have made it to popular culture and are here to stay. Think Hamm, the wisecracking piggy bank from Toy Story, or even the Money Box Museum in Amsterdam that houses a collection of thousands of piggy banks of all makes and sizes.

Whether your goal is to encourage saving or just melt someone’s heart, we’ve got an assortment of piggy banks that people would actually want to use, like this piggy bank with a removable nose. You know, just in case saving doesn’t make any “cents” anymore.
