Diane Alber, author of the book "I'm NOT Just a Scribble", decided it would be an excellent idea for children to create messages of kindness in a more creative way. She encouraged children to draw scribbles with eyes and smiles regardless of their artistic talents. Thus, National Scribble Day was born.
Scribbling has a long history going back many centuries. The word scribble originated from the Latin word 'scribere,' which means 'to write.' People would often write words hastily, which can often be illegible to read and therefore, they would be described as scribbles. Even famous people in history would scribble. Leonardo Da Vinci was a known scribbler with examples seen in his tiny notebook dated 1494.
Sometimes scribbles are described as doodles, but many believe they are really two different things. Doodle first appeared in the early 1600s and is derived from the German word "Dudeltopf" or "Dudeldop", meaning ‘simpleton.’ In a modern context, doodle means to create simple drawings.
In terms of our artistic abilities, we all start from somewhere. All of us start with scribbles, but who knows, one day, we'll have our own masterpiece.
