Gifts for National Sticker Day

Admit it. There was a time in your life that you were obsessed with stickers. It might have been those gold star stickers from your favorite teacher for a job well done, those free collectible stickers from your snacks, or those bumper stickers you carefully placed on your first car.

Stickers are found virtually anywhere, including on shipping boxes, journals, tumblers, computers… you name it. Yes, it’s not just for the kiddos or a great way to express ourselves or show off our favorite things. Have you ever wondered how stickers came to be? We did a bit of digging, so read on and find out!

Archaeologists have found relics of ancient stickers dating back to ancient Egypt. These ancient stickers were used to label products or show prices for goods in the market. A few centuries later, particularly in the 1700s, tax and revenue stamps were usually affixed to documents and products with gummy glue. This practice persisted for several decades. There is some disagreement as to who should be given credit for creating the first sticker. It is thought that Sir Rowland Hill developed the first sticker in 1839. At that time, he came up with the idea for an adhesive paper, which would later become the basis for the first postage stamp. R. Stanton Avery, the founder of Avery Labels, is also credited to have invented the first self-adhesive sticker.

Either way, stickers continue to be ubiquitous in our modern world and continue to be a fun way to express ourselves. Stickers are also a great way to promote an event, brand, or business.
