When you answer the phone, do you say “hello,” or “ahoy-hoy”?
We know what you’re thinking. Why would you say “ahoy-hoy” when you’re not a pirate, right? But according to Alexander Graham Bell, the first person to get a patent for the first commercial telephone, it was the best greeting when picking up the phone. Many begged to differ, including his rival, Thomas Edison, and insisted “hello” was the better option.
We can’t imagine ourselves saying “ahoy-hoy” when we answer the phone. Still, there’s no denying that the telephone has changed how we communicate since its invention. Could you ever imagine a world without a modern telephone network that now permeates every aspect of our lives, from personal communications to global trade?
There are many inventions that can claim to have changed the world, and today we celebrate one of the greatest on the 25th of April, National Telephone Day. Next time you pick up the telephone to speak to someone in another city, complete a business transaction, or call emergency services, ask yourself how different your life would be if Alexander Graham Bell had not invented the telephone.
