Gifts for National Tempura Day

Tempura is a Japanese dish made with shrimp or vegetables dipped in tempura batter and deep-fried until crispy. In many people's minds, the term "Japanese food" immediately conjures up images of sushi and tempura. If you've ever eaten at a Japanese restaurant, you've probably tried it or at least seen tempura on the menu. It's one of the most common Japanese dishes served outside Japan.

Surprisingly, tempura's historical roots are not from Japan. During the Muromachi era of the 16th century, Portuguese Catholic missionaries brought with them the cooking method of coating food with flour and then frying them. The name "Tempura" comes from the Latin word "Tempora," which means "The Ember Days'' (quattuor anni tempora), which is a time when Catholics abstain from eating meat. Some say the name "tempura" comes from the Latin ”ad tempora cuaresme," which means "in the time of Lent." The Japanese thought this was the dish's name and hence called it "tempura."
