Gifts for Therapeutic Massage Awareness Day

If you feel you haven't been getting enough sleep lately, get a massage. It's believed that an hour of massage is equivalent to getting seven to eight hours of sleep while increasing levels of endorphins and serotonin in our bodies—two 'happy' chemicals that have substantial benefits to our well-being. If that's not amazing enough, the ancient origins of massage therapy date back to 2700 BC, possibly earlier. This ancient practice has been depicted in historical writings, artwork, and archaeological evidence from various ancient civilizations in India, Korea, China, Egypt, Japan, Thailand, and Greece.

While the benefits of massage were common knowledge and widely practiced around the world for thousands of years, the popularity of therapeutic massage diminished in the West when discoveries in pharmacology transformed the course of contemporary medicine. The cultivation and revival of massage therapy happened thanks to Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish physiologist, and educator who worked in the early 1800s. He is credited as the "Father of Massage," but that is not entirely accurate. It was Johann Georg Mezger, a Dutch physician, who built upon the concepts established by Ling and was the first to develop Swedish Massage as we know it today.
