Gifts for World Letter Writing Day

Did you know that the record for the most letters received in a lifetime is 22,018? Between 1987 and 1991, Gabriel Antoniu Lavrincic from Romania started exchanging letters with pen pals. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he averaged between 20 and 80 letters per day during a four-year period. Each letter has been meticulously preserved with envelopes and postage stamps. Thanks to his friendships with his pen pals, Gabriel even became fluent in Russian and English. When it comes to most letters written, the record is held by Uichi Noda. From July 1961 until his wife's death in March 1985, Uichi Noda sent 1,307 letters to his ailing wife Mitsu while he was traveling outside of Japan.

While messages of today travel in a blink of an eye without us having to buy stamps, envelopes, or beautiful stationery, our ancestors used handwritten letters to communicate for thousands of years. As writing materials and literacy evolved, so did the proliferation of handwritten letters. There's something so appealing when it comes to letters you can actually hold. Wouldn't it be nice to start sending handwritten letters again?
