Gifts for National Doughnut Day

We're going to bet that you've already eaten "olykoeks." Don't know what we're talking about? It's the old name for doughnuts, which literally translates as "oily cakes" in Dutch. While that might be an off-putting name for one of our favorite desserts, we're willing to overlook that and instead focus on the delicious goodness they offer.

The doughnut's history goes back centuries, even far back as ancient Rome, where cooks would fry dough and serve them after dipping them in honey. When doughnuts debuted in the United States, they weren't ring-shaped. The hole in the middle has got many historians baffled about how it came to be, but legend says the American sailor Hanson Gregory claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847. Unsatisfied with the greasy and uncooked center of the doughnuts, he punched a hole in the center with the cover of the ship’s tin pepper box. It was believed that he passed on this technique to his mother, and the rest is history.
